St Georges, Eagle Strikers in big clash

A top-of-the-table clash today between leaders St Georges Sports Club and second-placed Eagle Strikers at Lynch Park, will highlight this weekend's round of matches in the Portland Football Association Western Union Major League competition.

The game in one of two that will be played today, as Hope Bay United will host Ujama in the other at Canewood. Both are set to kick off at 3 p.m.

St Georges, on 17 points from five wins and two draws, are unbeaten and hold a decent advantage over Eagle Strikers, who have played one game less and have 12 points, are also unbeaten, but have won three and drawn as many games in their six fixtures to date.

They will see this as a glorious opportunity to close the gap on the leaders, who were held to a goalless draw by fifth-placed Buff Bay (nine points) in an area derby last Sunday at Lynch Park.

Eagle Strikers also played last Sunday, ending goalless as well in their away clash to sixth-placed Snowhill (eight points).

Secured victory

However, Eagle Strikers had better luck in their second match this past week, when they registered a 2-0 win over home team Manchioneal (six points) on Tuesday at Jones Park.

Another match was played on Tuesday, which saw Boundbrook United defeating Hope Bay United 1-0 at Canewood.

Boundbrook, which lie third on 12 points after seven outings, had also secured a victory last Saturday, when they turned back Manchioneal at Boundbrook Pavilion.

Fourth-placed Ujama (nine points) were also victorious Saturday, registering the biggest margin of the week, a 3-0 shut-out over last-placed Norwich (three points) at Hector's River.

Following today's fixtures, the competition continues tomorrow with two matches, Buff Bay United vs Norwich at Lynch Park, and Manchioneal vs Snowhill at Jones Park. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.

The Round One fixture will close off with three matches next week. On Tuesday Eagle Strikers will face Boundbrook United at Carder Park, and Snowhill will face Hope Bay United at Snowhill. Then on Thursday, Buff Bay United will welcome Manchioneal at Lynch Park. All games are set to begin at 3 p.m.
