No justice in judge's decision

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As I caught up on the news around the world Thursday morning, I came across the headline 'Cop in St Ann video-recorded shooting freed of murder'.

I am disgusted at the decision of Justice Marva McDonald Bishop for dismissing the case against Lloyd Kelly, who was alleged to have publicly murdered a Jamaican citizen in St Ann in 2010. The judge's decision has upheld the long-standing belief that the police in Jamaica are above the law.

Police officers are accountable to Jamaica's citizens, who they took an oath to protect. Irrespective of their accused crime. They must understand clearly what role and responsibilities they play in the Jamaican society; and that contrary to their belief, they are not judge, jury or executioner.

Mr Editor, the video that has gone viral shows what could reasonably be considered premeditated murder. I call on the minister of justice to review this case in its entirety and to file the motion to remove this judge from the Bench.
