THE EDITOR, Sir:
The monthly meeting of the Portmore Municipal Council was not held on March 13, 2013 because of action by some members of the council in a suspected protest action aimed at Mayor George Lee.
The meeting was cancelled after only three councillors reported to conduct the community's business.
To councillors Wint, Gunnings and Blake, we say thanks for taking the right decision. But to the others, the Greater Portmore Joint Council condemns your action.
This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated by the community, and questions must now be asked of these councillors. Are they serving the interest of the people they represent? Or are they serving themselves?
This staged protest of some councillors resulted from the mayor stating his objections in a motion passed by the councillors to increase the number of signing councillors on the municipal bank account. The motion was passed, but the mayor objected, and hence the boycott.
This was not isolated, as last month, following the monthly meeting of the Municipal Council, members of the Portmore Citizens Advisory Council were threatened because of citizens' objection to the acquisition of iPads. If this is how our councillors intend to operate, we are in deep trouble.
The Greater Portmore Joint Council fully supports the mayor and his position. We hereby condemn the action of those councillors who participated in the protest action.
HOWARD HAMILTON
Chairman
Greater Portmore Joint Council
