Football needs a kick in the shins

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I think Jamaica is suffering from low standards in football administration, coaching, media coverage, players, and fan expectations. The responsibility of our football administrators is to promote, develop and regulate the game. Where have they succeeded?

Most of our coaches are former players, former players who were probably badly coached and, therefore, never realised their true potential. In ALL the top footballing nations, tactics and spatial awareness are taught from age seven. Our team does/did not look like they understand tactics and spatial awareness.

Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez never played above 'pick-up' level, yet they are some of the best coaches around. Arrigo Sacchi, one of the greatest coaches of all time, was a shoe salesman! We need new blood in coaching and administration.

How rigorous are our coaching courses? How do they stack up internationally?

People say that Jamaican fans and the media have high standards and expectations, but I say it's the opposite. They both have very low standards and expectations. Let us look at two players whom I won't name.

One is a midfielder that is just a pair of lungs that runs everywhere, does nothing to a high level and struggles to find teammates with simple passes. The other is a striker, a fast, strong lump that struggles to control simple balls because of poor technique and makes poor runs because of almost no tactical and positional awareness.

If you have a football culture that accepts players like these with so many flaws as a high standard, we will never produce a Messi, Xavi, Falcao or Cavani.

We need a clean break from the past. New leadership, vision, will, and commitment.
