THE EDITOR, Sir:

There's one interesting point to ponder with regard to Martin Henry's column 'Independence: Jamaica vs Singapore', published in The Sunday Gleaner of August 4.

The London School of Economics and the great lecturer and scholar Harold Laski did lay a foundation for Jamaica with Michael Manley, Barbados with Errol Barrow, and Singapore with Goh Keng Swee. Goh Keng Swee attained a PhD while our Caribbean brothers stopped at BSc.

The length of time in leadership wherein to implement change differed. Goh Keng Swee, for instance, had 25 years of unbroken rule to implement that change, and Barrow, 14 years.

We in Jamaica were not that fortunate. Staying the course is fundamental to long-term viability.
