The 2013/2014 schoolboy football season is set to kick off in the next four weeks, but lovers of the sport need not wait that long to see high-quality action as four of the island's top teams will compete in the third annual St George's College Pre-Season Football tournament at Winchester Park this weekend.
The tournament, set for today and tomorrow, will feature reigning Manning Cup champions St George's College, Clarendon College, Calabar High, and da Costa Cup title holders, Glenmuir.
The Macron/Kit star, Hi-Lyte and Toyota competition will see the winners pocketing $75,000, and the runners-up $60,000, and is free to the public.
St George's will tackle Calabar in the opening match today at 2:00 p.m. followed by Glenmuir up against Clarendon College at 4:00 p.m.
Tomorrow, Calabar will oppose Clarendon College at 2:00 p.m. before the curtain is brought down on the tournament with last season's Olivier Shield finalists St George's and Glenmuir renewing their rivalry.
The eventual winners will be determined based on points with the first tie-breaker being head to head followed by goal difference, most goals scored, most goals against, and the flip of a coin if necessary.
"It is getting close to the start of the season now and, with the prize money involved, it is a semi serious competition," St George's College's head coach, Neville 'Bertis' Bell, said. "It will be good for the coaches to see where their players are and what their team is looking like."
Despite being the hosts, St George's have never won the competition, but in both years that they have lost, they went on to cop the Manning Cup title.
Wolmer's won the first staging after beating St George's 2-1 in the final. Spaulding and Munro were the other two schools that featured.
Last year saw a points system being used to determine the winners instead of a final. Jamaica College came out on top while the other participating teams were St George's, Cornwall and Manchester High.
