Diana McCaulay, CEO of the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET), has indicated that her organisation is currently searching for recycling companies that are willing to collect recyclables from its depot in Kingston.
The hunt follows the closure of Protect the Environment Trust, a company that previously collected JET recyclables.
McCaulay stressed the importance of such companies, noting that Jamaica is in dire need of a proper recycling system.
"The waste management system in Jamaica is not up to standard. Greater amounts of recycling would help because it diverts part of the waste between other sites and also earns income for these companies," she said.
"This provides jobs and causes less waste to be burnt, thrown into the sea and gully, among many other things. Our current state of recycling is not near where it needs to be, so the fact that one important player is closed is definitely a major concern," McCaulay added.
