BEIJING, China:PRIME MINISTER Portia Simpson Miller has described as fruitful and rewarding a series of meetings held between the Jamaican delegation and Chinese investors.
Speaking with China's President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, the Jamaican prime minister said she is encouraged by the meetings held.
"We had some excellent meetings with a number of investors, we had the Development Bank of China earlier today, and we had some very productive discussions," Simpson Miller said.
The prime minister, who is leading a delegation comprising ministers of government, technocrats, diplomats and private-sector interests, is on a five-day visit to the East Asian country.
The delegation has met with China Communications and Construction Company, China Gezhouba International Engineering Company, and Complant.
On Wednesday, Jamaica inked four agreements with China, among them being an economic cooperation pact which will see the country receiving a 100 million-yuan grant from China. An agreement was also signed for the release of funds under the Major Infrastructure Development Programme.
In welcoming Simpson Miller and the delegation, Xi noted that both countries have benefited from cooperation over the years and said there is room for further growth.
He noted that Jamaica is in the process of implementing Vision 2030, and said his country has set a target of being a prosperous country by 2020.
The Chinese president thanked Jamaica for upholding the One China policy, a position embraced by the Michael Manley-led government in 1972.
"China appreciates such commitment," he said. "I believe that the opportunities presented by the deepening cooperation is very big for our cooperation in the future," Xi added.
In the meantime, Simpson Miller has commended the China government for leading the country to prosperity.
"I am deeply impressed with the progress China has made, notwithstanding the many challenges domestically and internationally, and I want to commend your outstanding leadership and your commitment to the growth and development of this great country for the benefit of your people," Simpson Miller said.
