Murray could face Djokovic in US Open semis
NEW YORK (AP):Defending champion Andy Murray could face top-seeded Novak Djokovic only in the US Open semi-finals, while Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who have never played each other at Flushing Meadows, might meet in the quarter-finals.
Murray beat Djokovic in the 2012 final.
Yesterday's draw for the year's last Grand Slam tournament also set up these possible men's quarter-finals: 2011 champion Djokovic vs 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, No. 3 Murray vs No. 5 Tomas Berdych, and No. 4 David Ferrer vs No. 8 Richard Gasquet.
The potential women's quarter-finals are No. 1 Serena Williams against No. 8 Angelique Kerber, No. 2 Victoria Azarenka against No. 7 Petra Kvitova, No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska against No. 5 Li Na, and No. 4 Sara Errani against No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki.
Maria Sharapova out
NEW YORK (AP):Maria Sharapova pulled out of the US Open on Wednesday because of a right shoulder injury.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced the withdrawal of the 2006 champion, who has played only one match on tour since her second-round loss at Wimbledon in June.
Sharapova originally was seeded third at the US Open. The USTA said 2012 Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanksa would shift from No. 4 to No. 3, and all other seeded players below her would move up a spot, too.
"I just wanted to let you know that withdrawing from the US Open has been a really tough decision to make. I have done everything I could since Wimbledon to get myself ready but it just wasn't enough time," read a message posted on Sharapova's Facebook page Wednesday.
