THE EDITOR, Sir:
Jamaicans continue to suffer grave injustices by way of our governments and political leaders, and in many instances, our business leaders, and it seems as if we will never get out of this kind of bondage.
My household bought a cable TV package from Logic One Cable Company and the package bought is the basic package, which carries 175 channels. In those 175 channels is NBC Sports at channel #632. We also added the basic plus package - which carries Fox Soccer Channel at #516 - to the previous package for an additional cost.
For the last two years, whenever there is an English Premier League match on Fox Soccer channel, the company switches the signal to something else, which ironically, has nothing to do with football for the most part.
The new season for the English Premier League started this weekend and NBC Sports is now bringing the games live. Instantly, the cable company blocked the signal. We called them to find out why, and to date, we cannot get a straight answer.
Now, one would think that after paying approximately $8,000 monthly for the channels of your choice, you should be entitled to whatever that channel is showing. However, that is not the case with these cable companies. They are forcing you to buy the SportsMax package for another additional cost, which includes Fox Soccer Plus, and interestingly, they will not sell you that package by itself. You have to purchase the basic or starter package along with any other plan that they offer.
If we are paying for the channel, why do we have to buy another package to see what we are already paying for? It is almost the same thing when they used to charge us for Cinemax and HBO, but they themselves weren't paying for broadcast rights. Now it is in reverse: they are charging us for the channels but blocking content from the channel as they please.
The relevant authorities need to look into it as it spells nothing more than fraud.
