THE MINISTRY of Education, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank, is to launch a pilot project to modernise the school-feeding programme.
The pilot is to begin this year in Region One, which includes Kingston and St Andrew.
Helen Robertson, director of the Ministry of Education's school-feeding programme, said the new project will see students being exposed to more balanced meals, which are locally produced and are nutritious.
She also noted that a national school-feeding policy is being developed. However, she was unable to say when it will roll out.
Robertson urged parents to buy into this new initiative, noting that several students entering the system already have bad eating habits.
"I think it needs to be a national imperative, and it has to have all the key ministries, health, agriculture, education, and not everybody having their own little thing because it's a national problem," Robertson noted.
