The Grenada govern-ment says it intends to use the system of geographical indications (GI) together with other intellectual property tools to protect its nutmeg and other spice brands.
Tourism Minister Alexandria Otway Noel, addressing a training workshop on 'Geographical Indications and Branding', said while the concept is not new, countries in the Caribbean are slow to recognise its benefits.
Jamaica is the exception.
"Apart from Jamaica with its Blue Mountain coffee and jerk seasoning, no other Caribbean territory has done any significant work in the area of geographical indications, and we have so much to celebrate in the region," said Noel.
The four-day workshop, organised by the Ministry of Legal Affairs in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization and the Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation, was to assist Caribbean countries implement proper identification of their products on national and international markets.
