The protected areas and coral reefs in the Goat Islands region must not stand in the way of development, growth and jobs.
The coral reefs are great to have, but they have not provided any value added to Jamaica over the years to bolster the economy. At some point, all resources have to be looked at when things are as bleak as they are for Jamaica.
Seemingly, fate smiled upon Jamaica with the widening of the Panama Canal, works which I have personally seen on the ground, along with Nicaragua's plans to build a canal to compete with Panama. Jamaica is the most strategically placed country to become a hub serving both canals, being almost due north of the existing canal, and slightly northeast from the proposed new canal.
Chinese investment at the Goat Islands would allow us to capitalise on this windfall.
It would amount to the worst mismanagement, even ahead of the Dudus affair, to let this project suffer a miscarriage. Opportunity is knocking. We must open the door and grasp and proceed with Bolt speed!
