I am increasingly concerned with current administration plans to develop a logistics hub in Old Harbour, St Catherine, because our environment could be at risk. This could destroy the very livelihoods of many fishermen who depend heavily on the sea to provide for themselves and their families.
The Government needs to engage in proper consultation with the National Environment and Planning Agency and other relevant organisations before making a decision. Jamaica is desperate for investment, but putting the environment at risk and eradicating social livelihoods is unwise.
There is no doubt that developing the port and logistics hub would be a necessary investment for Jamaica, because it would create job opportunities, but it is imperative that the Government use wisdom and not rush to sign off on anything until they look at every angle where protecting our enviroment is concerned.
