Since the fare increases took effect on August 25, 2013, there has been an air of confusion on the Port Maria to Highgate route in St Mary. Bus operators are now charging $130 and $150 instead of the old fare of $100.
This may seem fair in the eyes of many, but passengers were actually being overcharged before these increases took effect. What will happen on September 2, 2013 when most of the schools in that area reopen?
In addition to that, there are no rate sheets posted on, or in, these buses. The rate sheets I have seen posted in the buses that ply the Ocho Rios to Port Maria route do not show an official stamp or even the name of the organisation that created them.
Calls to the St Mary office of the Transport Authority proved futile. The calls were transferred to the Research Department. I was put on hold four different times and then the calls were disconnected.
If one is to accept these increases in fares, the Transport Authority and the police should be more vigilant in ensuring that this policy is enforced properly and justly.
