Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has urged schoolgoers to focus on their studies, underscoring that education is one of the surest ways of social mobility.
"Young ladies, let the young men know that you can only learn one lesson at a time and that lesson should be your studies," Simpson Miller charged.
"Young men, you are not excluded. One lesson at a time!"
"I know the temptation is great but your education must be the only priority right now," she added.
The prime minister, who was speaking at the 'Portia Simpson Miller 75th anniversary of the Making a Difference Scholarship' programme last Friday said it is imperative that youths remain persistent. She also reiterated her commitment to providing educational opportunities for every Jamaican.
"Now is not the time to be having fun and playing around when so many of our people are out there suffering and having a hard time as a result of the economic challenges," she said.
"We try as best as possible to provide educational opportunities to all our people, but I pray for the day when we can fund education the way we would like to, because this administration is aware that only education can uplift our people," said Miller.
