A male prisoner was killed yesterday and several police officers injured during what the police have said was a riot at the Mandeville Police Lock-up.
The police said shortly after midday, they were taking prisoners from the jail to the court, when the inmates started to revolt.
They said two police officers including a woman sergeant tried to calm the situation but were attacked and beaten by the prisoners.
They said after the confrontation, all the injured were taken to the hospital where the prisoner died and the injured police officers admitted.
The identity of the prisoner who died was being withheld up to late last night, to allow the police to inform his relatives.
One of the policemen is said to be seriously injured after being hit repeatedly in the face and head with a baton by one of the prisoners.
The matter has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations.
