The late-blossoming football rivalry between former champions St James High and Cornwall College, to be renewed on Saturday, gained added thrust after St James punished Anchovy High 2-0 at Jarrett Park yesterday in a pulsating 2013 ISSA/LIME daCosta Cup Zone A football fixture.
Last Saturday, when the season kicked off, Cornwall completed their part of the equation by beating Maldon High 2-0, and now share the lead in the zone.
St James left it rather late in their game, however, but sprung to life through substitute Santino Brown's 74th-minute strike. The teams went into the half-time break dead even at 0-0.
Then in the 91st minute, another second-half substitute, Javoy Campbell produced a peach of goal when he sent one defender one way then swivelled inside before unleashing a torrid left-footer that sailed into the upper reaches of the net, to make the score 2-0 in favour of the Gregory Palmer-coached St James High.
"Everything we did in training paid off and the players were a bit nervous, but the longer the match went on, the better they got. I think we deserved the win," said Daley.
"We feel good leaving here and will be putting in the work for the big game on Saturday. We want to make it two from two, and playing Cornwall will bring the best out of my players," he added.
In Zone B, Frome Technical edged Green Island High 1-0 to claim the lead. In other matches, The Manning's School got off to a winning start, netting a 1-0 victory over Little London in a Zone D fixture in Savanna-la-Mar, while 2005 champions Godfrey Stewart laboured to a 2-2 draw with Black River.
In Zone E, there were big 6-0 wins for parish rivals Munro College and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) over Newell and Maggotty, respectively, as the two teams jumped into a share of group honours.
Manchester High had to settle for a 1-1 draw with B.B. Coke in their Zone F clash.
The competition resumes on Saturday with a full slate of games across all zones.
