It is an unfortunate fact of life, that the pre-teen to adolescence age group are particularly vulnerable. They is very susceptible to social pressures, personal mistakes and errors of judgement that can have adverse long-term, effects on their life and prospects.
Parents, particularly mothers, have the responsibility to teach life skills to their daughters. However, today's busy mothers, trying to balance a career and family in the 21st century, often worry that they are not doing a good enough job in passing on crucial life lessons to their daughters. The good news is, it is possible to tap into the vast, global, intergenerational and timeless resource of motherly wisdom and daughters' points of view.
The 876 Mother-Daughter Project is a Jamaican/Caribbean-centric, global virtual community of mothers, daughters and their well-wishers. It seeks to provide mothers and daughters with member-shared information, advice, tools and resources designed to support, enhance and celebrate the mother-daughter relationship.
The overarching goal of the project is to create a safe, accessible, and interactive universe of online and offline resources that cater to the needs of girls 10-19 years old, on their journey to self-actualisation.
Mothers and their daughters around the globe now have their own online community where they can share ideas about parenting.
Launched just over a year ago, membership is free and open to all who fit into any of the follow categories: mother; daughter; well-wisher. This means that everyone who is interested in supporting and celebrating the mother-daughter relationship, can join.
The relationship between parents and children is a sacred trust and the 876 Mother-Daughter Project is particularly focused on the relationship between mothers and daughters. This bond is dynamic and often complex, with far-reaching implications for good mental health. Despite conflicts and complicated emotions, the mother-daughter bond is very strong.
Despite your own anxieties about what all the secrecy means for your relationship with your child, the experts tell us that we shouldn't worry unduly about it, as this desire to keep secrets from parents is an important growing and maturation period for your child. Nevertheless, this period is fraught with potential and actual conflict between parents and teens and needs to be managed well on the part of parents, so that at the end of it, the ties that bind remain healthy and strong.
Ideally, a girl's best template for how to be a woman should be her mother; therefore, the 876MDProject believes that whether she is biological or surrogate, a mother first needs to become the best mother she can be, so that she can teach her daughter how to become her best, most capable, adult self.
