The Portmore Muncipal Council is looking to strengthen its disaster preparedness and climate change framework to militate against future environmental catastrophes.
The council recently partnered with the Canadian city of View Royal on an exchange programme under the theme 'Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready'.
Under the programme, a delegation from the Portmore municipality traveled to Canada where they looked at the town's experiences in disaster-risk reduction.
The delegation, led by the council's disaster coordinator, Phillipa Ricketts-Edmund, said coming out of its trip they will now be embarking on the creation of a public-education strategy to promote disaster prevention and management in the Portmore area.
The council will also be hosting a group from Canada, which will engage in a number of planned activities in relation to disaster-risk reduction and climate change adaptation. This is expected to include a tour of the most vulnerable areas in Portmore.
The partnership is being promoted by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction global campaign.
