The Marley Resort & Spa, at Cable Beach in Nassau, Bahamas, has been closed for renovation but will reopen for business on October 1, according to Carl Little, a spokesman for the property.
The property was originally used by the Marley family as a holiday home but was converted into a luxury boutique resort and spa, according to the marleyresort.com website.
The facility's services have been given names such as Natural Mystic Spa; Marley's Boutique; Simmer Down Gourmet Caribbean Restaurant, and Stir It Up Bar.
Queries to the Marley family were redirected to a Curtis White, who declined comment on whether the family holdings include other resort properties.
The Cable Beach property was acquired more than 30 years ago.
"Bob and Rita Marley discovered this former governor's mansion on a visit to Nassau, while they were recovering from an assassination attempt in Jamaica (1976). The property's lush gardens and oceanfront location provided a respite for the Marley children to balance with life in the mountains of Jamaica," says the website.
"In 1982, Rita purchased the home, and for 16 years, Rita and their children spent holidays and summer vacations together in Nassau."
PIVOTAL ROLE BY RITA
The site also indicates that Rita Marley played a pivotal role in remodelling the home into a resort.
"In 2004, they planned to renovate the home for the growing family, but once the process started, Rita decided that this retreat should be a home away from home for everyone. Mrs Marley's Afro-Caribbean aesthetic helped shape the room designs and adherence to feng shui. Daughters Stephanie and Cedella sourced the hand-carved furnishings, exotic fabrics, art, and dramatic carpets from Africa and the Caribbean, recreating the style of the original home.
In 2007, the Marleys built an extension to house the garden rooms and suites, and added the Marley Boutique.
Guests are told through the website that they may find themselves sitting down for dinner with Rita or waking up to Ziggy strumming a song on his guitar.
