A clash of heads between Norman Manley's Jamoly Green and Excelsior High's Colorado Murray during the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup Group B match at Excelsior cast a gloom over the game, which played out to a dull 0-0 draw.
The 10th-minute collision occurred when Green was attempting a powerful defensive header while Murray was using equal force to try and head goalwards.
Green, who is Manley's leading scorer, fell to the ground unconscious and was bleeding profusely from his mouth, while Murray nursed a sore head. Green was revived and lifted into a vehicle which was escorted away by a police car. Murray resumed playing.
No word on player's condition
Norman Manley's coach, Alrick Clark, had not received word on Green's condition at the end of the game.
"No word on him yet; he is at the hospital," Clark said. It (collision) affected us greatly on the field, as he is one of the leaders on the field. But we had to play, so the guys really rallied and supported each other, so a point away from home is great."
The match failed to recover from the incident, as both teams looked cagey and shied away from aerial duels. Excelsior came close to taking the lead just before the interval when Damani Morris was picked out on the back post by Kareem Banton's pass, but his shot flew just wide of the far post.
The best chance of the game came in the 78th minute when one of the tallest players on the pitch, Excelsior's Samuel Halliman, head over from close range.
Despite the stalemate, seven-time Manning Cup champions, Excelsior, remain atop the group on 10 points, followed by Norman Manley on eight. In the group's other games, St Jago defeated Haile Selassie 5-1 to move to seven points and remain third. Waterford's 1-1 draw with Cumberland was enough to move them to four and above Haile Selassie (three points) into fourth. Cumberland who were gaining their first point from three attempts sit at the foot of the table.
