Jamaica College (JC) notched their fifth consecutive win when they tagged Bridgeport High 3-1 in a top-of-the-table Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup group E football match at JC's Old Hope Road playing field yesterday.
The winners moved to 15 points with their perfect record at the half-way stage in the preliminary round. Bridgeport remained in second spot on 10 points.
JC netted courtesy of goals by Rafique Bryan in the 10th minute, Malique Foster (37th) and substitute Stefan Logan (74th), while Rayon Swire netted for Bridgeport in the 65th minute.
The JC team went on the attack early and could have taken the lead, but captain Junior Flemming shot wide of the target from close range. However, Flemming received a good pass on the left flank and provided a cross that Bryan neatly finished past Bridgeport goalkeeper Zachry Whitter.
It was 2-0 when Foster headed home past Whitter.
Bridgeport picked up the tempo with some good displays by captain Shaquille Folkes, Clayon Pusey and Swire. Both teams went close to scoring, but the half ended 2-0.
In the second half, Bridgeport fought back and scored when Swire blasted past JC's custodian, Courtney Dowdie.
However, JC sealed the deal when Logan, who came off the bench, netted from close range.
"Tactically, we got it right. The boys know how to handle pressure as they have done well in their schoolwork," JC's coach, Miguel Coley, said at game's end.
"I am not pleased with some aspects of the game, but I am not worried about giving up a goal as it came from a set piece. We did not give them too many looks at goal," Coley noted.
Meanwhile, Bridgeport's coach, Tyrone Roberts, said his team that was losing for the first time this season gave a poor performance.
"Definitely, JC played better in midfield. It was a poor performance by the team. We came to play, but indiscipline crept in and we gave up three goals. We will come again," Roberts said.
