Fourteen-time champions Kingston College (KC) got back to winning ways as they clipped group leaders Spanish Town High 1-0 in their ISSA/LIME Manning Cup Group F football match at KC's North Street playing field yesterday.
The game's lone goal was scored by Kashane Jones in the 21st minute to see his team bounce back from a shock 1-0 defeat to Greater Portmore High in the previous round.
Despite suffering their first defeat of the season, Spanish Town still remain leaders of the group with seven points. KC, who have played a game fewer than all the other teams, are second on six points.
In the group's other game, third-place Greater Portmore (six) played to a 1-1 draw with bottom-place Penwood, who were gaining their first point. Fourth-place Eltham (four) were idle.
"We took three points off the leaders, which is very crucial for us, plus we have a game in hand," KC's coach Donovan 'DV' Hayles reasoned.
"This puts us back in control of the zone and the confidence will come and I think the flow will come with it as well and we can really look forward to having a happy season," he added.
Jones' goal came on the back of some brilliant work on the right side by Chevaun Blake, who dismissed two Spanish Town players before picking out his teammate in the box for him to redirect home from seven yards out.
The home team went on to totally dominate the first half as they bossed the middle of the field. This control of possession did not, however, translate into clear goalscoring opportunities.
"I am really disappointed because we did not perform any time in the first half," Spanish Town's coach Anthony Thompson said. "We lost the game in the first half; I don't know if it is the hard game that we played Saturday and we have not recovered from that."
The game was a much more even contest in the second stanza, with Spanish Town coming closest to scoring in the 86th minute when their captain and top player Nathaniel Leslie forced KC's custodian Akim Larmond to tip a 35-yard free kick over the bar.
