Montego Bay United jumped into second spot in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) on the back of an Allan Ottey strike as the sole campaigners from western Jamaica defeated defending champions Harbour View 1-0 on Sunday.
The win condemned Harbour View to their second loss in three games and kept them in 11th position on one point in the 12-team league. Only the still winless Portmore United sit below Harbour View, and the win made the former Jamaica Under-20 player a jubilant man.
"My aim was to come and beat Harbour View here. I have never beaten them here before and I wanted to do that so I am very, very happy that it has happened and that I am the one to score," said the man who started his Premier League career as a 15-year-old for Village United while still a student of St James High.
The speedy player said he assured his teammates on Saturday that victory would be delivered by him.
"From Saturday, I told my teammates not to worry and to depend on me because I would score and give us the victory," said the player who hit the back of the net eight times for Montego Bay United.
MANY GOALS TO COME
Having scored his first goal for the season, Ottey said that many more will come as he stated his intentions to displace another St James-raised player as the competition's leading scorer.
"I scored eight goals last season, but I plan to be the leading scorer this season, and I will get there with hard work.
"I am playing in the right midfield position right now, and I am happy with it because from that position I am seeing the goal clearly. When I play in the forward position I have my back to the goal, so this position suits me better," he added.
Besides his bold prediction of finishing the league's top scorer, Ottey also stated that they will finish in the top three with goals coming from himself, Dino Williams and Leslie St. Fleur.
His goal and his team's top-three finish will take him closer to his professional dreams.
"The national team is where I want to get. I have played for the Under-20 team and want to get to that level. I know it takes hard work and that is what I am putting in now and will continue to do it.
"Once I get to that level, the next step is to play overseas and I am working hard on that also so that I will be able to earn enough to take care of my family and myself," the ambitious player said.
