Two months after ATL Automotive group hired Ian Lyn to establish and run its new pre-owned motor vehicle division, the automotive sales guru and the company have parted ways.
Lyn explained that his three-month contract ended early, on a mutual basis, because opportunities have arisen in New York, United States and Europe which he wants to pursue. "It was an open-ended contract. I did my job very quickly," he said.
Lyn is a former president of the Jamaica Used Car Dealers Association, with expertise spanning both the new and used-car markets.
In July this year, ATL appointed him to take charge of the its newly-created certified pre-owned car dealership, for which sales and service is centred at the ATL Auto Parts Centre at lower Hagley Park Road, St Andrew, and which gave ATL Automotives a presence in the used-car sector.
In August, when ATL announced Lyn as general manager of the division, the company said he was expected to lead the unit in taking a "significant" share of the used-car market.
ATL invested US$1 million (J$103.5 million at current rates) as start-up costs for the new division.
Lyn's last day at the company was Friday, September 27.
Adam Stewart, chief executive officer of the ATL Group of Companies, told Wednesday Business on Monday that "Ian Lyn was hired by the ATL Automotive Certified Pre-Owned Division to help launch it into the local market. We are happy that Ian has helped us to achieve that goal and we wish him well for the future."
Contacted on Monday, Lyn told Wednesday Business: "I established ATL Certified Pre-Owned dealership and put it on the map in Jamaica, breaking ATL into the used-car market as planned."
Black Whole Entertainment
He explained that "a major US company, Black Whole Entertainment LLC in New York, has hired my services for a major fleet deal in Europe, and I will be travelling to Germany and England in November to purchase several luxury vehicles including Bentleys and Range Rovers. This US$500,000 (J$51.75 million) deal couldn't miss me. So for the month of October, I will be busy preparing for this trip, as well as reassuming my duties at my dealership, Carmax Jamaica Limited."
Lyn indicates that he is managing director of CarMax Jamaica Limited.
Lyn confirmed that he is scheduled to appear in court today concerning a matter he said is unrelated to his role at the ATL Group.
"The court (matter) on Wednesday, which ATL has been aware of for weeks, a matter which is being settled out of court, has nothing whatsoever to do with my day-to-day operation of ATL Certified Pre-Owned because I am still a consultant," he said in emailed responses to Wednesday Business queries.
His profile on LinkedIn indicates that his extensive career in the auto industry started in New York where he opened his first used-car dealership, Ian's Auto Sales at the age of 18.
Lyn said that another certified pre-owned car dealer will be established in Jamaica, but said it might not necessarily have anything to do with him.
He explained that "certified pre-owned means that the vehicle has been through a 150-point inspection."
