Why you need to know
Explorer can crash at any time and, often times, it will crash over and over again, interrupting work flow or even navigating the computer's system. This does not mean that the computer is useless and needs to be thrown away. However, it is a problem that can lead to serious issues with the computer's operating system. This problem is common for Windows 7 users. Note briefly, this fix is not for Internet Explorer issues but Windows Explorer that controls opening document and file windows/folders.
If this is happening for the first time, just restart the computer and give it time to load the applications, software programs and files stored on the device. It is possible that the computer is overworked or has too many items stored to the hard drive, which will require a disk clean-up (backup important files on an external storage device or media card and delete unnecessary items). However, if the computer continuously displays a blank screen, flashing taskbar that mimics a crash, then restart in 'safe mode' and follow these steps. If the option to restart in 'safe mode' does not appear as the computer restarts manually and loads the start-up screen or lists hardware installed, press F8 (the function key 8). Here, you will manually check the system for any errors, delete unwanted files and backup. Also, review any programs or software downloaded recently - it may be the reason that Explorer is crashing due to an interference. Disable or uninstall the software and ensure that a compatible version is reinstalled.
You can also open the C:\\ drive and open C:\\Windows to select the Windows Explorer file, that is, explorer.exe and copy to the C:\\Wondows\\System32 folder also in the C:\\drive using 'CTRL+C' to elude the crashing. Carry out a complete scan of the computer using the virus-protection software installed or download Piriform CCleaner to analyse the system and fix issues.
