Jamaica College (JC) will look to make it win number eight from as many games when they play away to Bridgeport High at Ferdie Neita Park in their Group E ISSA/LIME Manning Cup match today with kick-off set for 3:30 p.m.
It is, however, more than a perfect record that is on the line as the dark blues know that a win will go a far way in securing for them a spot in the Walker Cup knockout. The winners of the seven groups and the best overall second-place team are guaranteed a place in the knockout competition.
JC currently leads the group with 21 points, having scored a whopping 37 goals while conceding three, with Bridgeport (19) second with 27 goals for and eight against.
In the group's other games, third-place Jose Marti (16) host the struggling Tivoli (zero), while fifth-place Ardenne (three), who have an -18 goal difference will play away to fourth-placed St Andrew College, who also have three points, but with a -12 goal difference.
Despite being the 'winningest' Manning Cup team with 24 titles, JC have only captured two Walker Cups (2009 and 2010), a tally that new head coach, Miguel Coley, is keen on increasing.
"We intend to win all the games ahead of us; it won't be easy, but that is our intention," Coley shared. "And the Walker Cup is definitely on our radar."
Bridgeport, who have won two Manning Cup titles and one Walker Cup, have two games outstanding to JC's three; hence the onus is on them to secure all three points.
"We are looking forward to this game," Bridgeport's coach, Tyrone Roberts, revealed. "Every game is a must-win game right now. We can't afford to slip up."
When the two teams met in the opening round, JC came away 3-1 winners, but Roberts believes this was as a result of his players not adhering to the game plan of preventing their opponents from advancing down the flanks and containing Junior Flemming.
Flemming is JC's captain and top scorer with 12 goals to his credit so far.
