THE EDITOR, Sir:
It appears that the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, isn't open for business, even after the start of the academic year 2013-2014. I have tried on numerous occasions to call several organs of the said campus and have spent a lot of calling credit to place such calls and I'm yet to speak to anyone on that side.
I am knowledgeable that this is a university that is preparing students for their professional places in society, and part of such preparation is the need to display proper and good customer service.
However, the body that is geared towards such professional preparation is yet to display such tenets in how it treats with answering the phones. The communication system at UWI is one big mess!
On Tuesday, October 8, 2013, I had a situation that required me to call the university's Bursary Unit, and I've been calling that unit since 9 a.m. and the phone rings without an answer.
Is this the kind of behaviour that one should expect from the sole regional university that is being funded by regional governments? I would further like to state that they do not respond to emails either.
As far back as my enrolment into the university, I have tried to contact several organs of the campus and I'm yet to receive even an acknowledgement to those emails that I have sent.
The bursar refuses to even dignify a lowly student like myself with a response to the several emails I would have sent to her attention. The state of affairs at the UWI, Mona, with respect to communication leaves a lot to be desired.
I am asking that the administrators seek to fix the problem and stop wasting people's productive time by having us calling their offices without success.
