Okay, let me declare from the beginning that I cannot, nor have I ever been able to, sing!
Can't hold a note to save my life or somebody else's. Don't have the breathing power to at least disguise my voice like I have more bass than I actually do, and I've wondered at times if I'm tone deaf. Been told I don't have a bad voice by somebody who can actually sing (but then, she's my friend so I took her compliment with a grain of salt).
So having got that off my chest, I can honestly say what I am about to say in the rest of the column is not borne of the much talked-about Jamaican notion of 'bad mind'.
This whole song and dance about 'The Voice' is getting on my nerves. First off, all di licky licky dem who just want to keep up with the Joneses (and the Kardashians) start watch the show because Tessanne Chin is competing. Half a dem neva know wha name 'The Voice', and might mix it up with the United Kingdom-based newspaper of the same name. If they even knew that! All of a sudden everybody tun 'Voice' fan. I bet dem can't tell you one song Blake Shelton sing? And if unnu don't know I'm referring to one of the judges, then you are one of them I'm cussing! By the way, personally I think it's a shame that Tessanne is not considered as having 'buss' yet, hence her desire to do well on the show. My definition of buss is apparently different from other people. I hope she wins the flipping show jus' fi dat!
But not to get distracted from my bigger angst that TVJ bought the rights to carry the show and then, initially, brought it delayed. Now, I don't like to see smart people doing dumb stuff, but that's exactly what this is. I hope that somebody, or better yet, nuff smaddy at that great station (and it is a great station) actually saw the potential backlash that such a decision would cause. So, maybe they were outvoted. That would be fair enough because some of us get outvoted in life all the time. But if everybody thought this was a good idea, all a unnu deserve beating! For those who just a tune in to the show, a good! Dat fi reach unnu.
I hear it's a nice show. Personally, I'm not a fan of these talent shows because I feel half the time the judges couldn't do much better and the viewers judging wouldn't know real talent if it tump dem dung! But what do I know? After all, mi cyaan sing! Later.
