The taxpayer should not be burdened with the funding of legal expenses for cops who have been accused of, or charged with, misconduct; their union, the Police Federation, should be footing their bills through a group insurance scheme for legal expenses.
Use the money to train cops about the boundaries of the law. Then we wouldn't need the Independent Commission of Investigations.
Legal expenses for front-line personnel in the line of duty must not become part of taxpayers' burden.
Operating outside the law must have consequences. Legal expenses are part of that.
