THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am a television producer with CBC Barbados. I feel compelled to offer this comment on the Shanique Myrie judgment so that your Jamaican readers will have a more accurate view of Barbadians.
Following the announcement of the court's judgment, there were numerous comments from callers to radio programmes supporting the decision. I myself was pleasantly surprised at this. Yes, there are many Barbadians, including myself, who were outraged at the treatment suffered by one of our Caribbean sisters. We are not all xenophobic, wannabe Britishers.
The time has long passed when we should have put aside our petty, nationalistic rivalries and jealousies and begun to see ourselves as Caribbean people. The time has also long passed when we should be able to move freely within the region, without let or hindrance.
I don't believe in following blindly what Europe does, but its example in this respect is worthy of emulation.
