THE EDITOR, Sir:
I agree that reparation should be paid by the descendants of the Europeans who exploited Africans in the Western Hemisphere. It is proper for CARICOM to seek redress. The only issue is that the regional bloc has taken so long to realise and support Mike Henry, who has been championing the cause for years now without the support from any government.
One needs to be aware that the exploiters received millions of pounds after abolition, but the ex-slaves got nothing. Even the rugged mountainous lands the slaves were made to occupy, they had to pay for.
After the 1914-1918 so-called World War I, many countries received reparation from Germany. Even the mighty USA got compensated. These are recorded and can be found on Page 1,051 of the New Standard Encyclopaedia and, doubtless, many other world volumes.
The poor infrastructure of Jamaica could well benefit from reparation. The work of Professor Verene Shepherd and MP Mike Henry need to be applauded and assisted by the government of the day and all who wish good for the betterment of Jamaica and its citizens in general.
The prosperity enjoyed by those European countries, whose white ancestors were involved in the inhuman and degrading trading of Africans, is a direct result of the indignities meted out to our African foreparents. Reparation is required. Support it!
