The Editor, Sir:
On October 17, 2013, credit unions worldwide will celebrate International Credit Union Day under the theme 'Credit Unions Unite for Good: A Better Way' by joining together and celebrating their cooperative spirit to commemorate the credit union movement's history and achievements.
In an era that continuously poses economic and financial challenges for people around the world, this year's theme honours credit unions' cooperative principles. Credit unions provide access to affordable financial services to all their members, and provide even the most financially disadvantaged with the tools and the opportunities to be financially self-sufficient.
The movement continues to be a united force based on camaraderie, cooperation and collaboration. Credit unions all over the world are united with an unwavering belief in the 'people helping people' philosophy upon which they were built.
Unlike banks, credit unions are not in business to make profit, and continue to be a safe place for all Jamaicans to save and borrow. Whether on a small or large scale, doing good is something that credit unions take seriously, and every Jamaican should become a member of a credit union, where you are never seen as a number, but a member.
