Fidge Fletcher, Stylist
Now that fashion weeks are over, I've rounded up the eight trends for the season that stood out the most, runway trends you can also do on your own. Besides bright blush and neon colours that have defined the spring/summer season's great trends; crop tops, maxi skirts, tribal/African prints, sheer details, fringe, and exaggerated silhouettes all made strong statements as well.
Metallic shorts or pants are always a power statement. Metallic shorts were a big hit on the runways in New York this season. The best way to style a pair of metallic shorts on your own is to give it a hint of sexy with another on-trend item, a sheer button-up blouse to give it that hint of sexy with a conservative twist. Don't confuse metallic with sequins, sequins are a little disco fever while metallic is softer with the same powerful effect.
Tribal prints made a huge splash on the runways this season between New York, Milan and Paris. Celebrating art expression and Africa was on everyone's mind and the best way to do that is to go bold with graphic and tribal prints. It's always best when you mix prints, it makes such a statement and you're deemed to stand out in the crowd. Being in Jamaica, you are more than likely to find graphic prints and African fabrics, so run out and get those prints ready for the coming months.
The crop top is one of the hottest trends right now for the season. They are always best paired with a maxi skirt, high-waist shorts or low-rise trousers. Crop tops have been around on the fashion circuits in the past, so before you go running out to get one from your favourite boutique, check your wardrobe and you're likely to find one from past seasons. If not, then you can always do it yourself.
It's great to see big accessories making a comeback. A face is never a face without a pair of earrings or a statement necklace. Great earrings can make or break an outfit and this season, we are seeing that bigger is better when it comes to ear candy. So don't be afraid to style your look with luxe bedazzled earrings especially with the holiday season approaching. Luxe earrings are best paired with a look that is not too busy; you don't want to take the focus off your ear candy.
Fringe is one of my favourite edgy and funky trends that can never be done wrong. It can be done in so many ways from a dress, shorts, and jackets to a clutch. It's also a great DIY project. You can always make your own fringe look by fringing a piece that has a great pop of colour, an older tee, skirt or dress with the right pair of scissors and your look is ready to go.
Sheer is this season's most risk-taking trend. The peek-a-boo detailing is a mix of provocateur meets sporty. The sheer trend can be a tricky one if not styled appropriately. If you're going sheer on the top, keep it covered on the bottom. Sheer tops again go best with skirts and pants. The best sheer tops are done with a minimalistic approach underneath with a matching bra or crop top. The best sheer tops also are black or white. With the weather always being fairly hot in Jamaica, you can always take advantage of wearing a sheer top or pants all year long.
Floral prints are always fun! They're so ladylike and flirty and can be styled in so many ways. You can give a floral print dress or skirt a little funky vibe by styling it with a jacket, with a bright-colour belt or wearing a floral print dress by itself with a pair of flats or peep toe sandals.
WIDE LEG TROUSERS
The wide leg pant is a great play on the tom boy look for the season. It's best paired with a tuxedo, blazer or a blouse. From cropped to fitted, designers showed fresh takes on this style staple this season. This is an oldie but goodie and you can always dive deep into your wardrobe and revive the wide leg pant this season.
