THE EDITOR, Sir:
True discovery or innovation comes from seeing the old and familiar in a new light. Adaptation, cooperation, education, innovation and transformation are among the critical factors which have ensured the survival of human beings throughout the ages and resulted in development to the extent where we moved from living in caves and the jungles to living in houses and large metropolises.
The proposed development for the construction of a logistic hub on the Goat Islands (off Jamaica's mainland) has resulted in a major controversy. At the same time, however, the concerns of the environmentalists are not to be ignored, but carefully evaluated.
People are generally resistant to change, even those which are for their betterment. Yes, progress in every form always comes with a price. And the crucial questions regarding the proposed logistics hub on the Goat Islands are: What price are we willing to pay for this development, and what price should we not have to pay with respect to the environmental impact this will no doubt have?
Again it comes down to enlightenment and transformational thinking for sustainable development.
