The 35th running of the Tallawah Beer Superstakes on November 9, at Caymanas Park will feature a mouth-watering clash between the derby winners TYPEWRITER and PERFECT NEIGHBOUR.
Both are co-favourites for the big mile and quarter race (invitational) which offers a total purse of $4.5 million. And with the two having looked razor sharp in their preparation, it should be a 'duel to the death', as they say in racing.
While both should carry the bulk of the betting, CTL's racing secretary, Denzil Miller Jr said at yesterday's launch there will be others looking to cover themselves in glory, and nothing is cast in stone. He recalled the stunning upsets by MAJOR MAYER (2007) and HOMBRE (2009). Miller said that HOMBRE, despite his advanced age, will have one last go at the race.
"He finished second to RUM PUNCH in the Ace Supercentre Trophy over 1820 metres on Heroes Day and will be among 13 or so starters for the race.
"HOMBRE will be joined by other probable starters such as CLASSY PROSPECT, COMMANDING CHIEF, Oaks winner LADY AHHIJITA and EXOTIC GOLD, RAGING PROSPECT, TIME FOR ARMS and, of course, RUM PUNCH.
"It is interesting to note that TYPEWRITER, PERFECT NEIGHBOUR, COMMANDING CHIEF, HOMBRE, CLASSY PROSPECT, RAGING PROSPECT and the fillies EXOTIC GOLD and LADY ABHIJITA have all won over the Superstakes distance, and it augurs well for this year's renewal," said Miller, who added that the race has had a long and colourful history with horses such as LEGAL LIGHT, THE VICEROY, MENUDO, MIRACLE MAN and MARK MY WORD being multiple winners.
Turning to the $1,750,000 Tallawah Caribbean Sprint Championship, Miller singled out two-time Horse of the Year SAINT CECELIA from the Spencer Chung stables as the one to beat, having won the race three years in a row.
"The American colt BLAST THEM AWAY has established himself as the top middle distance horse in the country, and looks the likely winner of the Tallawah Imported Mile for a purse of $1.25 million, while a new star could be born in the Caymanas Juvenile Sprint," he concluded.
