Discounts galore and unbelievably low prices were on offer yesterday as The Gleaner Company's Food Month extravaganza started at the Shoppers Fair Supermarket along Brunswick Avenue in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Samples of products, practical tips on preparing low-cost healthy meals, spot prizes, and other fun activities were on offer for shoppers who turned out for the start of the monthlong celebration of food in Jamaica.
One shopper, Rose, from Eltham View, was among those who cashed in on the promotion. After doing her usual shopping, she was advised to check at the booth outside, where in addition to winning a spot prize, she qualified for a scratch-and-win entry.
"It makes me feel good because at least I am getting back something finally," she told The Sunday Gleaner.
COUPONS ALL MONTH
Every day throughout November, The Gleaner and THE STAR will publish discount coupons, which can be redeemed at Shoppers Fair Supermarkets across the island.
In addition, during the sales-promotion activities, shoppers will be able to get discounts on products from Nestlé, H.D. Hopwood, Facey Commodity, Chas E. Ramson, Mussons, Anthony Handel, NMH Trading and Distribution, Logo Stitch, EVE, Virginia Dare, and GraceKennedy.
This shoppers' extravaganza is in sync with the drive by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to get Jamaicans to make more informed choices about the foods they consume, which will translate into them opting to buy more fresh, nutritious local produce. The plan is to get them thinking seriously about how they can reduce their food bills, without compromising on nutrition.
However, in addition to eating right, regular exercise is also integral to maintaining healthy lifestyles, and fitness activities will also be part of the monthlong activities, given that non-communicable lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are on the rise.
