In celebration of Disabilities Awareness Week, the Digicel Foundation partnered with the Ministry of Education (MOE) in support of its Special Needs poster competition and participated in UNICEF's 2013 launch of The State of The World's Children report.
The week has been observed in Jamaica since 1994. The Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities has been working towards full inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities since 1973. This goal is directly in line with the foundation's objective to heighten awareness around the specific challenges facing the special needs community, while recognising their invaluable contribution to society.
Held under the theme 'I Can Learn, Teach Me the Right Way,' the poster competition, which was hosted at the Special Education Unit of the MOE on Arnold Road in Kingston, was organised to create more awareness around children living with disabilities. Students from across the island with varying disabilities submitted entries in four categories: Early Childhood - ages 4-8 years; Primary - ages 8-12 years; High School- ages 13-18 years; and Young Adult - ages 17-21 years.
