WESTERN BUREAU:

President of the Trelawny Netball Association, Clint Parkins, believes this year's Social Development Commission (SDC) Open League has opened up the sport in that parish.

He also spoke of a new format for next year's competition.

"This league has been a tremendous success from the point of view that it has certainly exposed individual players to top-class netball, and it has also served to bring together communities in which we play these games," said Parkins.

He said teams such as Jackson Town, Albert Town and Bounty Hall Blazers 'A' have shown marked improvement since entering the league, adding that they will form the base of the league's growth.

He said the present league will give birth to a two-tiered league system next year, with the top four teams from zones A and B playing in the Senior League, and clubs finishing from fifth place and below in the two zones will contest the Junior League.

"This will bring more exciting matches to the people and further expose our talented ladies across the parish," said Parkins, "In addition, I think the game will see even more development in the future."

On Sunday, Falmouth United continued their unbeaten run when they brushed aside Nampel All-Stars 24-19, to maintain their lead in Zone B on goal average over Bounty Hall Blazers A, who defeated SH Strikers 36-19.

In other Zone B games, Samuel Prospect and Classic United failed to show for matches against Sherwood and Muschett High, respectively.

The high-riding Albert Town Infinity had to dig deep to hold on to a close 27-24 victory over the improving Bounty Hall Blazers B in Zone A. Clark's Town also came away with a crushing 31-8 victory over the hapless Wait-A-Bit.

There will be some final preliminary-round encounters on Saturday. The Zone A matches will be played at Albert Town High School, with Clark's Town up against New Road at 1 p.m., Jackson Town vs Wait-A-Bit at 2:00, and Wilson Valley Xtreme hosting Bounty Hall Blazers B, starting at 4 p.m.

The Zone B preliminary round will climax at Carey Park Multi-purpose Court on Sunday, where Sherwood Content will meet Classic at 1 p.m. and Samuel Prospect versus Nampel All-Stars at 2 p.m. The much-anticipated clash between Bounty Hall Blazers A and Falmouth United will take centre stage at 3 p.m., followed by the clash of the cellar dwellers, SH Strikers and Muschett High, at 4 p.m.
