THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am bemused by the fact that some politicians believe all that is needed to address the crime problem is to fix the police force. The absurdity of this assumption should not escape us. The sad truth is that our crime problem has got out of control due to the lack of proper and effective leadership, and poor governance. This has crippled economic development, resulting in limited opportunities for young people and making it extremely hard for them to survive.
Opposition Leader Andrew Holness conceded that one of our major problems is ineffective leadership, but this is not to be employed as a political ploy for electioneering, but should be an opportunity for him to chart the course ahead. I am of the view that as long as the country remains stymied in economic deprivation, crime will drown us. As we look ahead to 2014, let us demand good leadership in all areas of our beloved country.
