LETTER OF THE DAY - Zero tolerance for attacks on police

Published: Friday | December 27, 2013 Comments 0

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In this time of lawlessness and violence, we need to stand as a nation to fight the scourge on our country. We need to work together to overcome the evil forces that have taken over our Jamaica. I think that the police need the people as much as the people need the police. But we have become casual in the respect and protection for each other. As citizens of Jamaica, we cannot tolerate the attacks on police, the ones who are sworn to protect and serve us.

criminals have become ruthless

The criminals have become ruthless in their attacks on our forces. They seem to believe that they won't be caught or the consequences won't be severe. They are protected by certain segments of the public or they have put so much fear in people that they are afraid to speak up.

Whatever we need to do to protect our police force must be done. If we need to get outside help to assist with forensics and investigations, then let's do it. Our response has to be swift and harsh to let the criminals know that they will be punished in the harshest sense. The public absolutely need to work more with the police, because they know who the criminals are.

I think that the police need to work on their standing with the community. They need to be fair and honest about their everyday dealings so that people will be more inclined to help. Jamaica is in a bad place right now, but working together as a united front to overcome the attacks both on our police force and the innocent can lessen the scourge on our nation.
