THE EDITOR, Sir:
Let me commend the Christiana potato growers on the various ventures they have undertaken over the years to ensure the continued production of local potatoes in the parishes of Manchester, St Elizabeth, Trelawny, and Clarendon with more than 17,000 farmers in the group.
I must further extend commendations on the venture they are about to undertake to produce ethanol from sweet potatoes. This should, in my view, facilitate an increase in sweet potato production by local farmers once the project commences.
With a project like this, there should be significant economic growth in these areas as farmers, who form a significant portion of the population, will experience increases in earnings, which give rise to increases in spending, thus local businesses will do better with increases in sales.
Simply put, this is a step in the right direction. We must ensure though, that the farmers who do the work are the ones who achieve maximum benefit. It must never be that others become wealthy from this venture while those who work the hardest remain in the clutches of poverty. Ah who do di planting fi do di reaping.
