Mixed results for USVI, Jamaica

TEPIC, Mexico (CMC):United States Virgin Islands (USVI) ended their participation in the Centrobasket Tournament on Tuesday with an impressive victory, but Jamaica bowed out with a heartbreaking defeat.

Jonathan Gray dropped a match-high 26 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the USVI to a 105-70 victory over El Salvador.

Akeem Scott led all scorers with 14 points, but Jamaica failed to hold their nerve in a competitive final period and the Panamians beat them 62-55.

Jamaica had a chance to finish the tournament strongly in Group A, but Panama outscored them 20-15 in the final quarter to get the victory.

Weyinmi Rose added 11 points for the Jamaicans, but they let things slip away in the final period after running the Panamians close throughout the contest.

Jamaica trailed 14-16 after the first quarter, but outscored their opponents in the second period to draw level at 30-30 at half-time.

The Jamaicans were narrowly outpaced by Panama in the third quarter, trailing 40-42, but they ran out of steam down the stretch.

The USVI's Gray scored six of 17 from beyond the arc to lead the offence for former Caribbean kings USVI, as they led the game throughout.

USVI dashed to a 32-13 lead after the first quarter and extended their lead to 62-32 at half-time, before forging ahead 87-48 after three periods.

Four other players scored in double figures for the USVI - Aaron Brown supported with 15, Cuthbert Victor got 14, while Angel Rivera and Laron Smith netted 10 apiece.

The USVI ended with a 2-2 record and finished third in Group B behind Mexico and Puerto Rico, but just in front of the Bahamas, the other English-speaking Caribbean country in the tournament. They failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Bahamas were not in action on Tuesday.
