Oz Minerals, a Canada- based company, says there is potential for finding copper and gold in central Jamaica.

According to Vern Rampton, president and CEO of Carube Resources, a joint partner with Oz Minerals, the potential for expanding the exploration in the community of Bellas Gate in the central parish of St Catherine is good, and drilling will be done at other locations in the parish, reports Caribbean Media Corporation.

In response, Minister of Science Technology Energy & Mining Phillip Paulwell confirmed that exploration licences were issued a few months ago to Oz Minerals, and the company will be exploring for gold and copper in four areas in the parish by using the latest technology available.

OZ Minerals said it drilled two holes in the area and intersected "significant copper and gold mineralisation".

Paulwell says he should have the results of the exploration so far very shortly. It is also hoped that the exploration will lead to the production of gold and copper.
