INDECOM probes fatal shooting in Mountain View
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it has commenced an investigation into the fatal shooting of a civilian on Langston Road, Mountain View, Kingston.
The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Frei Riley.
In a release yesterday, INDECOM said a team of investigators and forensic examiners, led by the director of complaints for the eastern region, Nigel Morgan, responded to the incident scene approximately 2:30 a.m. yesterday.
"The scene and the body of the deceased were processed by INDECOM's forensic team," the release stated. "The hands of the concerned officers were swabbed and their weapons taken out of circulation for submission to the Government Forensic Laboratory for analysis. The concerned officers were served with notices to furnish the commission with their statements and arrangements were made for interviews to be conducted with them at the commission's headquarters in Kingston (yesterday)."
INDECOM also said investigators revisited the scene approximately 11:30 a.m. with a view to continue collecting information from civilians and police personnel and trawl for civilian witnesses.
Riley was shot and injured following an alleged confrontation with the police along Langston Road. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he died while undergoing surgery. It was reported that two other men were also involved in the incident, however, according to police, they escaped.
"INDECOM is encouraging the residents to exercise patience and continue to cooperate with investigators as they carry out the probe into this incident," the commission said.
The commission also appealed to persons with information that could assist with the investigation, or any other probe, to visit or call its head office in Kingston.
