Watching the Kimani Ffriend situation

Published:Thursday | August 14, 2014 | 8:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

What is the point of the headline of the Kimani Ffriend story? 'Ffriend in need! National basketballer seeks gov't support to beat jail time in Serbia'.

It is prejudicial and clearly incorrect because you report that Kimani himself opines that he does not expect the Government to intervene in a legal matter.

It says he is guilty so don't waste your sympathy on him; a position many have taken, as can be inferred from their comments.

I sincerely hope that our Government is taking a more generous and proactive view of Ffriend's unfortunate situation. After all, it wasn't so long ago that Serbians were trampling the rights of their own citizens with careless and destructive abandon.

The public would be forgiven if it thinks Ffriend would get a much fairer trial if the Serbs are aware that a concerned Jamaican Government and people are watching.

The public would welcome regular updates from The Gleaner and its sources.
