JCSC speaks out on Mario Deane case

The following is a statement by the Jamaica Civil Society Coalition:

The Jamaica Civil Society Coalition (JCSC) is appalled by the beating and subsequent death of Mario Deane. The horrendous tragedy is compounded by the reported treatment now befalling the three accused men and their families. It is completely unacceptable that attorneys were not present at the questioning of the accused, that the families of the accused are not being given access to their relatives and that advice on the process for legal-aid counsel has not been offered to the families that need this.

This entire situation is damning and shows exactly how perverse the system of protecting the welfare and rights and accounting for persons in police custody is.

It demands the full, personal attention of the ministers with responsibility for security and justice and the most senior ranks of the police force.

The JCSC is demanding that urgent action be taken to ensure the proper care, welfare and management of the custody, and protection of the rights of the accused.

The callousness and abuse must stop.
