Churches react to Deane matter

Published:Saturday | August 16, 2014 | 12:00 AM

The following is a statement by the Jamaica Umbrella Groups of Churches:

The Jamaica Umbrella Groups of Churches (JUGC) deeply regrets the circumstances that have led to the untimely death of Mario Deane. We offer our condolences to Mario's family, friends and all others who have been gravely impacted by his passing. The JUGC is also aware of the negative impact this occurrence has been having on members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). The JUGC stands ready to support a healing process for all those concerned.

This incident is another glaring reminder that if we are to move ahead as a people, respect for each other and an appreciation for the sanctity of life are critical pillars. This is especially true for those who are entrusted with the care and protection of our citizens. In that vein, we welcome the actions taken thus far by the JCF.

While the public's response to this very unfortunate situation is understandable, the JUGC appeals for calm and calls upon all those who have relevant information to share it with those who are carrying out the investigations, in order that justice may be done.
