LETTER OF THE DAY - Fenton fiddles while hospitals burn
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I am now beginning to believe that Dr Fenton Ferguson is the biggest grandstanding minister of all. The Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, the Nurses Association of Jamaica, and the Opposition are allowing this failing minister to get away with too much.
My view was confirmed after the canteen at one of Jamaica's biggest and most popular hospitals was being closed down by authorities because it was overrun by roaches and rodents. When I heard of the situation, through the media by the way, I hastily arranged food and drinks for a church sister admitted there. The same hospital also had to shut down its operating theatres because the air conditioning was not working.
Then who can forget the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, where horror stories from distraught pregnant mothers abound, running out of water. Then now I see where many employees of the South East Regional Health Authority have been deprived of their allowances time and time again.
While all of this is happening, the minister of health continues to issue press statement after press statement 'til it is out of style. He continues to wax on about smoking and schedules one grand, unnecessary announcement week after week. His announcements centre on donations from the private sector and every 'going-nowhere' policy position you can think of.
Dr Ferguson, I am afraid, is all talk. Arrogant speeches and dancing up and down on political platforms is now his latest gig, while the public hospital and clinic systems are falling into ruin.
Instead of gallivanting and jumping in front of a camera every chance he gets, I urge the minister to get to better understand the issues in his portfolio and move to addressing them.
I am sick of the grandstanding.
